The third sector in the UK, consisting of vital organisations from charities to social enterprises to voluntary organisations, generates around £100 billion each year. Though the sector serves important socioeconomic issues and protected groups, it is less diverse than both the private and public sectors, with 9% of its employees being from an ethnic minority background. Simultaneously, Black organisations and professionals in the third sector are often underfunded, underrepresented and isolated.
The Black Third Sector exists to shift the current environment and seeks to improve diversity in the sector by improving the connectivity, resourcing and influence of the Black presence within it. Too often, for Black professionals, it is an inaccessible area, where there is a lack of resources, i.e. funding, networks, etc., available for us. To combat this, we are creating an open, supportive and well-resourced community for Black people working in, hoping to join, leading and building organisations across the UK's third sector.
We want a community that centres our lived experiences, organisations and connections across a sector in which we have collective power and stakes. We aim to build shared insights, opportunities and ultimately, collaborations to build the Black third sector vertically and horizontally.
A space for connection, peer support, events, and mentoring for Black people across, and hoping to enter, the third sector. We want to link people from similar backgrounds of interest, experience and ideas to develop our collective presence and voice across the country. We value the social aspect of community, and hope to create a space for fun, beneficial socials and networking events that don't feel like a chore, but rather, a chance to relax and connect.
Research, lived-experience data, and shared learning that explores how race and ethnicity shape working life and opportunties in the UK charity and voluntary sector. We represent an important section of a key working sector, as such, we want to showcase our insights to aid current and future organisations, leaders and professionals across the board.
Advocacy, partnerships, and accountability that push the sector towards more equitable practice and representation. With this collective voice, we can speak up for issues facing the community, but also to highlight the great initatives being created and pioneered by us to influence the resourcing, treatment and equity of our ideas and projects.
Will you be a part of it? Join the growing group of Black professionals coming together from the UK's third sector to build networks, knowledge and community.
