- Supply chain shift from investment casting to AM
International gas turbine manufacturers such as GE, Rolls-Royce, and Siemens have started to construct "Smart factory", based on selective laser melting (SLM) additive manufacturing. So, supply chain has shifted from investment casting to additive manufacturing. GE has applied additive-manufactured fuel injection nozzle for its LEAP engine. Also, Siemens has tried to test additive-manufactured turbine blade for its SGT-400 industrial gas turbine. From these announcements, international gas turbine manufacturers has enlarged their interest on additive manufacturing for their products and hot components.
- Thermal-fluid design of turbine blade beyond the limitations of investment casting
In line with additive manufacturing's application on hot components of gas turbine, ideal thermal-fluid designs could be made up with application of additive manufacturing beyond the limitations of investment casting such as ceramic core for internal passage cooling, insert for impingement jet cooling, and electrical discharge machining for film cooling holes. Therefore, thermal-fluid designs for enhanced cooling performance ranging from slot cooling in blade tip to impingement/effusion cooling with a hollow cylinder structure are proposed and investigated.
