Farming and agriculture is extremely important to the Ibo people. The main crop of the Ibo people is yams. Yams are considered a man's crop, whereas crops such as coco-yams, beans and cassava are women's crops (Pg 23).
Men consult the Oracle, Agbala, who gives insight on bad crops and future prosperous crops to come (Pg 16).
The tragedy of lack of rainfall and bad yam crops really affects the Ibo people. "That year the harvest was sad, like a funeral, and many farmers wept as they dug up the miserable and rotting yams. One man tied his cloth to a tree branch and hanged himself " (Pg 24).
