Would it be a good idea to create an image of the drive before doing anything that might change data on the drive? Then I could restore the image if the repair encounters problems, and restart recovery efforts using the tools I mentioned above, or perhaps even other tools. I just ordered a couple more hard drives in case this might be helpful. I really want to avoid loss of data.

It will also find accidentally deleted partitions (either Apple Partitions, the newer EFI partitions and Windows MBR Partitons) and provide the necessary information for you to restore them using the Apple pdisk command (for Apple Partitions) or the gpt command for (for EFI partitions) PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from Hard Disks and CDRom and lost pictures (thus, its 'Photo Recovery' name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the filesystem and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's filesystem has been severely damaged or re-formatted.

That said, testdisk's photorec will probably allow you to scrape some of the data out. I believe it is classified as a data carver. I have used it before to recover stuff deleted from jump drives accidentally. It will search through the partition and look for headers of files and pull out the files. I dont think it will preserve the file names and folders and so forth, so you will have to go through what it pulls and figure out what is what.

So... the disk had two partitions on it, and (as hicui noted) only the first one was damaged. The good news is that I was able to undelete the entire second partition with testdisk. No damage was done to it whatsoever. testdisk preserved my file names, directory structure - worked like magic! The bad news is that all the important data was on the first partition. TestDisk does a quick check of your disk's structure and compares it with your Partition Table for entry errors. If the Partition Table has entry errors, TestDisk can repair them. If you have missing partitions or a completely empty Partition Table, TestDisk can search for partitions and create a new Table or even a new MBR if necessary.

However, it's up to the user to look over the list of possible partitions found by TestDisk and to select the one(s) which were being used just before the drive failed to boot or the partition(s) were lost. In some cases, especially after initiating a detailed search for lost partitions, TestDisk may show partition data which is simply from the remnants of a partition that had been deleted and overwritten long ago.

TestDisk has features for both novices and experts.
