By studying fossils, climate, ecosystems, and geologic features students are introduced to high-level science concepts in an approachable and relevant way. Students can understand modern problems (such as the climate crisis) and become the future agents of change. Best of all, there are many opportunities for careers and research in Earth science. Geology is one of the most employable college majors across several fields.
Many of these resources are specifically aimed at California students by discussing local geologic features and fossils, but they are absolutely applicable to any school.

I want a California Rock Kit for my classroom!
UCSC PhD student Gaetano Palazzo is synthesizing rock and fossil kits from Northern California geologic formations for K-12 classrooms. Many of the above lesson plans are structured around these materials. If you are interested in receiving a free rock/fossil kit for your classroom, please fill out the form linked above.
Kits will most likely be distributed during Fall 2025, and contain samples (and associated lesson plans) for California Natural Hazards, Volcanism, Origins of Life, Evolution of Life, Rock identification, and the Rock Cycle. We are planning to distribute 50-100 kits with ~10 samples and >20 associated lesson plans with activities and educator materials.
