Goal
MR will complete the second draft of her introduction and score above a 3.0 on the rubric while using spelling and grammar correctly more than 80% of the time.
Opening
Prior to MR coming in for tutoring session #5, she came up to me in school and told me that she was struggling to understand how to properly use “is” and “are.” She had told me that the first night she went and completed the worksheets at home and her mom corrected it she failed. I sat down and briefly went over the differences with her and had her take notes. I also shared this video with her to help her at home if she got stuck again.
When MR came by days later after school for tutoring session #5, I immediately asked if her understanding of “is” and “are” had improved. MR’s face instantly had a huge smile come across it as she proudly told me she scored a 100% last night! I was so proud of her.
After this I asked her to take the following out: her sentence starts list, her opening and closing sentence list, her hamburger graphic organizer, and her quote T-Chart. I explained to her the goal of the session and laid out what we would be doing
Setting MR up for Success
Once MR had her lists and graphic organizers on her desk I asked her if she had any last questions before she started to write her final draft. She had a few questions about the order she should write things in and about several sentence starters. She told me she felt very prepared and was happy we mapped the introduction out the way we had in the graphic organizer. I also supplied her with a copy of her first draft. When I did this she quickly read it over and started laughing. When I asked her what was so funny, MR told me that she couldn’t believe how much her writing had improved. With that, MR was fully prepared to write her second draft!
The Outcome
After MR slowly and methodically went about writing her second draft, the outcome was incredible! MR correctly used spelling and grammar nearly 90% of the time, put together cohesive sentences, and used quotations in both a powerful and purposeful way! She scored a 4.5 on the introduction rubric as well.
