Skills MR Gained
Throughout this project I have seen my student MR develop the following skills:
- She is able to correctly use “is” and “are”
- She is able to read through articles, summarize the main idea, identify important information, and pull excerpts to use in writing
- She is able to identify words she does not know, make flashcards, and learn the meaning of the word
- She is able to use a graphic organizer to map out her writing
- She is able t use various sentence starters and write opening and concluding sentences
- She is able to include quotes in her writing and support them with additional details
Insight I Gained
As a science teacher, I was able to learn so much about reading and writing that I immediately want to incorporate into my classroom. Some major takeaways include:
- Having students make flashcards for all vocabulary words is critical to their vocabulary development
- Students want to be heard! It is crucial to support students by including their interests in your lessons. It better connects them to the material and makes them want to learn at a deeper level.
- Providing examples not only allows students to compare their work to others but gives them ideas on what they can be doing better.
- A graphic organizer is an amazing tool to help students lay out what they want to write and how they want to write it
Most of all I learned that my emergent bilingual students are capable of so much more than we give them credit for. I look forward to instituting new after school hours to help these students and hope that MR can help me encourage her peers to come a further develop their reading and writing.
