Acupuncture is an ancient, time-tested treatment technique that involves inserting tiny needles at specific points to help the body heal itself and function better.
The Traditional View: Think of your body’s energy like a network of rivers. When the water flows freely, your body stays healthy. If a "dam" forms, it causes pain or illness. Acupuncture needles gently clear these blocks, restoring a smooth flow so your body can nourish itself and heal.
The Scientific View: Acupuncture sends a "signal" to your nervous system. These tiny needles prompt your brain to release natural pain-relievers and healing chemicals. This helps reset your body's internal systems, reduces inflammation, and speeds up recovery.
Medical acupuncture is acupuncture performed by a doctor trained in both Western medicine and traditional acupuncture. This allows the physician to combine the best of both worlds—using modern medical knowledge alongside acupuncture to help you stay well, prevent sickness, and treat specific health issues.
Not at all! Acupuncture works whether you're a skeptic or a believer. In fact, it's used successfully on cats, dogs, and horses—and they certainly don't "believe" in the process. While a positive mindset helps any healing journey, the results come from the treatment itself, not your expectations.
Everybody is different. While some people feel relief right away, others with long-term issues may need a series of treatments. Generally, we start with one or two sessions per week, then space them out as you begin to feel better and remain well. I recommend at least three weekly sessions before deciding whether acupuncture is helpful for your condition.
Most people are surprised by how little they feel during acupuncture! The modern needles are incredibly thin—nothing like the hollow needles used for injections or blood draws. You might feel a tiny pinch or a tingle, but once the needles are in, the experience is deeply relaxing and often brings a sense of calm. For your safety, I use only sterile, single-use needles, ensuring every treatment is completely safe and hygienic.
Acupuncture is incredibly safe when performed by a trained professional. Most people experience no side effects. If you do notice anything, it’s usually a small area of redness, a small bruise, or a little soreness—similar to a minor workout. You might feel a bit sleepy or lightheaded right after, but a few minutes of rest and drinking some warm water or tea usually do the trick. Serious complications are extremely rare, making this one of the safest treatments available.
Yes. To get the best results from your acupuncture session, keep these guidelines in mind:
Dress Comfortably: Wear loose clothing so I can easily reach your arms (below the elbows) and legs (below the knees). These are where many of the most effective points are located. If we need to focus elsewhere, I’ll let you know in advance.
Eat Lightly: A light snack is perfect. Try to avoid a very heavy meal right before or after your appointment.
Take it Easy: Give your body a break. Skip intense workouts, alcohol, or strenuous activity for about 6 hours before and after your session.
Rest & Reset: If possible, plan for some quiet time afterward to let your body adjust and maximize the healing process.
Stay on Track: Continue taking all medications exactly as prescribed by your regular doctor.
Tune In: Notice how you feel over the next 24 hours! Your feedback helps me fine-tune your treatment plan during our next visit.
Coverage varies by plan, so I recommend checking with your provider to see what your specific policy includes. While Terrain Acupuncture does not accept insurance or workers' compensation directly, I will be happy to provide you with a "superbill" (a detailed receipt). You can submit this document to your insurance company to seek reimbursement directly from them.
