My high school friend, an electrical engineer, believes that solar farms could operate more efficiently by reducing the number of transformations between high and low voltage. Avoiding these transformations leads to energy losses, which he thinks can be significantly reduced with reasonable adjustments.
I understood his proposal, modelled his idea and found real-time adjustments to minimise energy losses, but to accurately estimate the expected energy losses of entire solar farms, we need data on the normal production distributions of solar panels throughout the day and the typical correlation between nearby panels. He is currently gathering this data.
