The CMU Global Challenges Hackathon is an annual initiative organized by Tepper Undergraduate Programs. The goal is to give students the opportunity to learn about and tackle society’s most pressing issues. The challenge this year:

Creating Inclusive and Sustainable Cities


During this hackathon-styled competition, small teams of students will work intensively on a common and narrowly defined global problem that integrates business and economic reasoning as well as data analytics tools learned at CMU. The 2022 Global Challenges Hackathon took take place between Friday March 18 and Tuesday March 29.


The competition started with a presentation of the challenge, at 5:00 p.m. on Friday March 18th. 11 teams worked until 9pm on Sunday March 20 to submit a video-presentation highlighting their recommendation for the challenge. Finalists were announced on March 25 and the final presentations took place on Tuesday March 29 starting at 5:00pm. The winner of the competition was "Ales in Wonderland" with a proposal titled "Housing Cost Smoothing and Income-Based Repayment" the team won $1,500. Second place was for team "Stack'd" with "Re-Use and Renovate" winning $1,000. Third place went to "Team MoneyBallers" with "Creating Affordable Housing using a Vacancy Tax" winning $500.
