The CMU global challenges competition is an annual initiative organized by CMU’s Economics Program. The goal is to give students the opportunity to learn about and tackle society’s most pressing issues.

The 2020 Competition took place between January 31 and February 1

During the 24-hour hackathon-styled competition, small teams of students work intensively on a common and narrowly defined global problem that integrates economic reasoning and data analytics learned at CMU.

The challenge for 2020 was: Income & Wealth Inequality

The competition begins with a presentation of the challenge, at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Following the initial presentation, teams will be provided with sources of data and other resources. The teams will have 24 hours to develop a solution/recommendation and prepare a presentation. At 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, the event will conclude with short group presentations and an award ceremony.
