Local and Iwi histories: Why it is importantant ?
Learning about our local history teaches essential skills. Children will learn and develop critical thinking, a deeper cultural understanding of Aoteroa New zealand, a great interest in history, and a greater sense of identity and belonging.
Individuals: are pushed to view the world from a different perspective. It teaches critical thinking when researching, like understanding biases and juggling multiple perspectives.
Communities: Traditions, stories and commemorations transforms our cities into communities. Telling these stories and continuing these local traditions help strengthen our community.
Future: Revisiting history in modern discussions, we can better understand the source of differing perspectives on issues we face in our community and in our country. History also serves as inspiration for current and future leaders. By looking back at role models in our our community before us, it gives current leaders the insight and inspiration to move forward.
Local History: Learning local history means children will have the opportunities to visit local places, and learn about key people in their local communities. History will become authentic and be fun. Starting with local histories will be an easier way for children to learn about history, then branch out into regional and national histories when ready. Local history will also encourage children to care for their local enviornment in their community.
Iwi History: Iwi history is the foundation of all New Zealand history, and without it New Zealand's history would be incomplete. Iwi history pre-dates Europen settlement, knowing more about it will deepen childrens understanding of place. Iwi history will help all children strengthen their identities and understand the impact of colonisation.
