How does a potentiometer work?

The potentiometer is a three-terminal electrical component that functions as a variable resistor or a voltage divider. For an example imagine you had a LED on the bread board and if you turn it to the left the light will dim because the potentiometer is slowing the flow of electricity. If you turn it the other way then the light would start to get brighter.
