Random thoughts, outreach, (fun) workshops, and news...
Samantha and I were invited to organize a second Chinese workshop at the Jean-Marie Pelt Botanic Park. We used the same content and always had a lot of fun with a different audience.
A fun workshop was conducted at the university library on the SHS campus to explore the Chinese reading and writing system. Samantha Ruvoletto, Marie Boyer, Daniel Zagar, and I led the session. The main idea was to let participants discover the semantic regularity that exists within Chinese characters. A fun familiarization-testing paradigm with real Chinese compound characters was designed, inspired by He and Tong (2017). Daniel and I prepared four after-session posters for this workshop about (1) cognitive mechanisms in reading, (2) timeline of reading acquisition, (3) theoretical framework, and (4) how the Chinese writing system works. For more information about the activity, see the links at ATILF lab and on the University Factuel website. For details on the materials and experimental design, please see the link on OSF.
