Tournament of Champions : Kevin O'Brien
The University Club Poker League, Season 2 concluded Wednesday April 2nd. Lets jump right into the highlights of the season:
We changed the funding structure, to reduce the fee per game for members who wish to play many games throughout the season. Instead of a $15 fee per game, we instituted a one-time $50 fee that allowed members to play as many events as they wish for one fee. This actually increased revenue 13% from Season 1.
The championship game had qualifying events that a member must have obtained: playing in four games, or placing in at least one game. This encouraged members to contribute more of their time, and play better poker. With this change we had 32 members qualify, an increase of 28% from Season 1.
Two additional volunteers contributed toward our success: Jack Burns and David Cox - if you have played in our events, you will know the coordination, chip distribution and layout, seat assembly, and recording accurate endings all leads to a fun event. When you see either of these guys, please acknowledge their leadership and support of the poker league.
For the record, we do not track gender data for members who play poker. So, off the record, 10% of the players this season were women, accounting for 12% of wins, and an astonishing 60% of the Championship Game earnings. Please recognize Grace Jiang, Sarah Forsythe, and Sheridan Kiple, Stephanie Draper, and Shilpa Patel for their poker intellect - better than Kenny Rogers, they know when to hold em, fold em and go all-in.
14 games were scheduled, with four games being held on the first Wednesday of the month. While by luck, these games also served as a promotional event for prospective new members, and will continue next season. Believe several poker players joined the club this year after seeing us in action during the PMR.
The athletics department facilitated the game room setup, with huge assist from the maintenance crew, while our food and beverage department had a full chit bar attended each week. The labor and commitment to our game makes it a wonderful place to play poker -- please share your gratitude with Terry Barnet, John Flanigan, when you see them in the club.
All league results are published on a non-club website hosted on google: https://sites.google.com/view/tempuccpokerclub/home
Our next scheduled season will begin in September 2025. If you are interested in developing the league, reach Steve Miller or Terry Barnett in Athletics.
Lastly, we need to recognize the Season 2 champion, Mr. Kevin O'Brien, who called Grace Jiang's all-in with a suited 9-3, catching a flush on the river. To say he was way behind was true, but he had 15 outs on the river (9 cards for a flush, and 6 cards for a straight). (see picture attached). Congratulations Kevin!!!

First game of the season, we had five new players!
Brand new (Aug 2024) UCC member Sheridan Kiple brought Chris Gilbert -- both played a tight game, but came up short in the money this event.
Mark Perry (July 2024) played a solid game, never showing his bluffs, landed in 5th place, and confidently registered for the September 25th event already.
Griffin Conboy (January 2024) had dreams of pop-tarts and crackers throughout his stint of playing short stacked. Griffin, from my memory, lost 95% of his stack in 2 hands, but clawed back his losses and then some to play another 2.5 hours. A valiant effort! And thanks to Griffin, Steve was able to take a break from dealing to get dinner for 30 minutes (thanks Griff!!)
Kunal Shukla (January 2023) is clairvoyant, there is no doubt here, calling down the bluffs and folding his made hands when the river rat appeared. Kunal was never in trouble but in the end the John and John duo ended his run with made hands.
Edward Hubbard (December 2023) was a no-show this week. We hope everything is back on track Edward, and look forward to your comradery in the future.
We had a straight flush this evening -- I cannot remember the action exactly, but believe Kunal, John Warner and John Faulkenberry all got in very heavy on the flop, turn and river. We think Kunal had the six of spades which would have made the low straight flush...a brilliant and absolutely crazy fold -- Falkenberry had the Ace (making an Ace-high flush), losing to John Warner's Jack high straight flush.
Our very own season #1 ending tournament champion, Mr. John Warner, also won the first tournament of season #2. Congratulations John - you are a proven, solid player who only bluffs when necessary! He is now 2 for 2...look for him in the registration and come by to give him a challenge none of us have so far!
The game was incredibly tight (outside of that hand). Nine players played for 2.5 hours. Makes me wonder if we should adjust the blind structure -- we have never had this many players remain in the game that long. I believe the game ended around 10pm -- long after the scheduled end of 9pm. So, more to come on this (ie, we have a 20 minute blind structure that may be more appropriate for 10 and fewer players).
Steve was all-time dealer (with a heavy assist from Griffin for 30 minutes). Not sure this is sustainable, so we will likely go back to the dealer button dealing.
Andrew wanted to know where this writeup was -- well, Mr. Hurvitz, here it is! I'm still a working stiff (Steve Miller), so club poker writeups will get written when all the other life-things are completed. Speaking of writing -- we are introducing a new form for all players to fill out, for any hand that they want noted in the summary. It will make the writeups easier for me to compile and I know Andrew will enjoy reading them soon after the event (rather than waiting a week).
May the river bring you riches,
Steve
