The month of June is always eagerly awaited in India. With schools closed and summer at its peak, it's the perfect time for families to escape the routine and go on a meaningful holiday. This year, our family decided to do something different, something spiritual. We planned a pilgrimage to Kedarnath and Badrinath, the two sacred dhams nestled in the lap of the Himalayas—a trip that turned out to be more than just a vacation.
As a family of eight, our priority was to find the most comfortable and reliable mode of transport. After browsing several travel websites and reading numerous reviews, we came across Malhotra World Travels, a reputable tempo traveler rental service in Delhi. And we must say—this was the best decision we made for our trip!
Comfort on Wheels – Our Tempo Traveller Experience
We booked a tempo traveller on rent in Delhi from Malhotra World Travels in Delhi. Their service was seamless from the first call to the final drop-off after the trip. The vehicle was in excellent condition—clean, spacious, air-conditioned, and equipped with pushback seats that made our journey through the hills comfortable. Our driver, Ajay Sharma, was courteous, well-informed, and, more importantly, a safe and experienced hill driver.
He became more like a guide and a family member during the journey, sharing fascinating stories and making sure we were always safe and comfortable on the road.
The Journey Begins: Delhi to Sonprayag
We started our spiritual journey early in the morning from Delhi. The route we followed was:
Delhi → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi → Sonprayag
Each stop had something beautiful to offer.
Haridwar and Rishikesh offered us our first spiritual breath. We witnessed the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri – a divine spectacle of lamps, chants, and floating diyas that filled our hearts with a profound sense of peace.
Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers merge to form the holy Ganga, was mesmerizing. We stopped for tea and just stood admiring the confluence.
After a brief halt at Rudraprayag, we reached Sonprayag, the base point for the Kedarnath trek. It took us nearly two days to arrive, with multiple stops for sightseeing, meals, and rest.
The Trek to Kedarnath – A Journey of Faith
Only registered vehicles can travel from Sonprayag to Gaurikund. From Gaurikund, the 16 km trek to Kedarnath begins. The route was a mix of spiritual chants, devotional songs, the sound of mountain winds, and the continuous roar of the Mandakini River.
Our family decided to complete the trek on foot, though pony and palki options were available. It was physically exhausting, but the energy around us kept us going. Everyone chanted "Har Har Mahadev," strangers helping each other – it was unity in devotion.
When we finally reached the Kedarnath Temple, standing tall amidst snow-covered mountains, it felt like time had stopped. We offered our prayers and spent the night at a warm but straightforward Dharamshala. The next day, after darshan again in the early morning, we started our return journey back to Sonprayag.
Onward to Badrinath – Home of Lord Vishnu
After resting for a night in Guptkashi, we resumed our road trip towards Badrinath. The beauty of Uttarakhand on this route is unmatched. We passed through Joshimath, saw the famous Narad Kund, and reached Badrinath by evening.
The Badrinath Temple is one of the most sacred places for Hindus, and seeing it lit up at night was truly magical. We felt an unexplained peace in the atmosphere. The temple premises were clean, organized, and well-maintained by temple authorities.
We also took a holy dip in Tapt Kund, a natural hot spring near the temple, before entering for darshan.
A Visit to Mana – India's Last Village
One of the hidden gems of our trip was visiting Mana Village, the last village on the Indo-China border. Just 3 km from Badrinath, this village is rich in culture and mythology.
We visited the Vyas Gufa, where Maharishi Vyas is believed to have written the Mahabharata, and the nearby Ganesh Gufa. There's also the Bheem Pul, a natural rock bridge believed to have been placed by Bheem for Draupadi to cross the Saraswati River.
It was a surreal feeling to be in the last village of India, so close to nature, tradition, and spirituality.
Returning with a Heart Full of Memories
After five soul-stirring days, we began our return journey back to Delhi, retracing the beautiful roads and memories we had created. Our driver ensured we reached our destination safely and even stopped at some roadside dhabas, where we enjoyed delicious parathas and chai.
The trip had everything – spirituality, adventure, family bonding, scenic beauty, and divine experiences. But more than anything, it gave us something money can't buy – inner peace and togetherness.
