April 4, 2025 at the NSLC
Since their founding in 2009, the North Side Learning Center's mission has been to "aid in adult and youth literacy development, and to be instrumental in teaching self-sufficiency and self-actualization to newcomers in our community." Their students come to Syracuse as immigrants and refugees from dozens of countries around the world.
Since the first round of Teens with a Movie Camera in 2024, the NSLC has been a crucial community partner in our "network of neighbors," supporting the program in many ways, from recruiting participants to providing transportation services.
As a culminating event for TwMC's 2025 spring workshop, we gathered at the learning center to share a meal, screen films, and celebrate works made by teen filmmakers.
A crowd of TwMC participants, NSLC students, and other community members gathers to watch the latest films made by Syracuse youth.

TwMC debuts their short film "Leapfrog," which was inspired by the history of early moving images. Several optical toys were on display for audience members to try for themselves.
A highlight of the event was a special appearance from former NSLC student, TwMC mentor, and Narratio Fellow Rayan Mohamed, joining to say hello via Zoom all the way from Prague, where she was studying abroad as part of the Syracuse University Film program.
Read more about Rayan in this article, "SU Film Student offers glimpse into immigrant experience through the lens of her camera," and by watching her 3-minute short film, "Samir (patience)" — a reflection on her time in a refugee camp.
Next to the line for pizza, community members formed another line to have their portraits taken by TwMC Co-Lead Tevvon Hines in stop motion style, creatively performing with gestures and props.
