Ballin’ On A Budget: The Truth about Transitioning into Educational Technology with Victoria Thompson

Want to transition to a career in educational technology? There’s a lot to consider–including pay, benefits, role, and career growth. In this session, Victoria and Alicia will talk about their journeys transitioning into roles in educational technology. Steps to take to get positions and enter career fields will be discussed, as well as maintaining credentials and keeping current in the field of education when you are no longer in the classroom.

Trust Black Women in EdTech with Victoria Thompson

It’s that simple: when you have employees of color--especially Black women--it’s important to take their expertise and dialogue into account in order to ensure that educational technology is inclusive and equitable. If this does not currently happen at your institution, the time to change is now. In this session, we’ll begin by sharing our expertise on the importance of including Black women and Black teachers as part of crucial leadership conversations. Then, we’ll be reviewing pathways for including Black women in conversations about educational technology and tactical strategies for recruitment and retention of employees of color in edtech.

SEL & Mental Health: Why They Matter

It is important to highlight the struggles educators endure and ways they can work towards a healthy existence. As a classroom teacher, I made social-emotional learning and the mental health of my students the driving force of my instructional planning. Data is important, but nothing is more important than nurturing the whole child. In this session, participants will learn tangible protocols they can assign their students as well as practices they can use in their personal lives.

How SEL Can Promote Equity

Social-emotional learning (SEL) alone cannot solve deeply-rooted inequities in the education system, but it can promote cross-cultural positive relationships and understanding, reflect and address the impact of racism, promote high-quality educational experiences and outcomes, and cultivate adult-student interactions. This session will highlight the significance of an anti-racist approach to SEL and ways digital tools can be used to leverage it.

The Significance of Adult SEL

By establishing adult social-emotional learning (SEL) as a priority, school leaders cultivate the capacity to deal with stress through self-care and build resilience, which can lead to improved job satisfaction, teacher retention, and improved outcomes for students. Throughout this session, participants will learn practical strategies that will focus on CASEL's SEL competencies that will increase their professional and personal productivity.

Culturally Responsive SEL

Research states that the benefits of social-emotional learning (SEL) include improved attitudes about self and others and decreases in aggression, depression, and stress. School-based (SEL interventions have served as a tool to support student social-emotional development and behavior in schools internationally. During this session, I will share research and practical ways teachers can implement culturally responsive SEL into their everyday instruction.

Equity in Educational Technology

According to the Office of Educational Technology, technology can be a powerful tool for transforming learning. It can help affirm and advance relationships between educators and students, reinvent our approaches to learning and collaboration, shrink long-standing equity and accessibility gaps, and adapt learning experiences to meet the needs of all learners. During this session, participants will be provided research and ready-to-implement practices in their daily instruction that support schoolwide equity initiatives.
