Age-Appropriate Ideas for Children & Families
Infants and Toddlers
Idea 1: Video Chat with Family Members
Infants and toddlers can get an opportunity to interact and communicate with the family members using video chatting. Video chat is more interactive than passive screen watching and facilitates language growth with the different types of responsive interactions. “The one type of media that is seen as making a positive contribution to development is live human interaction via video chat, which the AAP classifies as an exception to the no screen time rule [13]. The reason video chat is an exception is that a substantial amount of contingent interaction with the infant in the form of communication takes place during the call.” (Lammers et al., 2022, p. 2).
Idea 2: Interactive Storytime with Digital Books
The families can use simple online storybooks in their joint reading with the toddlers. Parents can also explain the pictures, ask questions, and connect the narrative with the relevant real-life experiences, which add to the vocabulary and understanding building.
Preschoolers
Idea 1: Literacy Apps with Adult Participation
The preschoolers can use literacy applications that can educate them about letters, sounds, and words. The aspect of age suggests that early literacy development is feasible since when parents are engaged in the process (asking questions and discussing what the child is learning), the process will become even more significant.
Idea 2: Digital Story Creation
Preschoolers can be proposed to create their own digital stories with their family with the help of simple storytelling apps. Children can record their voices, add pictures, and make their stories, and this is why it helps them to develop narrative skills and imagination.
Kindergartner
Idea 1: Interactive Alphabet and Phonics Games
In the kindergarten, learning applications may be incorporated in the process of letter identification, phonics, and word construction. With the help of such interactive games, children are able to practice the major reading skills in the most entertaining forms.
Idea 2: Shared Reading of E-Books
The parents can access online storybooks to read them to children and discuss the story and inquire. This reading aloud can make the level of understanding higher and allow the children to build vocabulary. “Inbuilt narration had a positive impact on story comprehension and word learning compared to reading alone but not shared reading with an adult.” (Booton et al., 2021, p. 401).
First / Second / Third Graders
Idea 1: Digital Reading Platforms
The young learners at the lower strata of elementary school can make use of digital reading platforms so as to practice independent reading. Such platforms tend to provide interactive learning experiences, such as highlighting, narration, and quizzes, to aid in understanding and developing literacy.
Idea 2: Online Writing and Storytelling Activities
Children can create short stories, create presentations, or record a digital story on a digital tool. These activities will allow children to master the skills of writing and only then be able to use technology creatively and meaningfully.
