What Research Says

1. Technology can support early literacy when used interactively.
Research indicates that,“Digital technologies are widely used in early childhood education (ECE) in various forms of e-learning to support the development of young children’s emergent literacy skills” (Liu et al., 2024, p. 1). According to the research, it can be speculated that the implementation of e-learning devices, stories online, and educational applications can perhaps be implemented in the scenario where the application is developmentally sufficient and pedagogically content.

2. Educational apps can improve literacy skills when designed effectively

The mobile learning app studies show that some functionalities of the apps' screens, e.g., narration, conversation prompts, and AR, can be powerful enough to positively influence children in their learning of the words and understanding of stories. “Similarly, children’s skills in their first language have been correlated with access to literacy apps” (Booton et al., 2021, pg. 401). These features provoke socialization and encourage learning literacy.

3. Interactive digital reading can motivate children to read

Comparison of the electronic and traditional reading has revealed that the digital reading experience can boost the motivation and positive attitudes of the children towards reading. Children may also be motivated to experience and read after the availability of the interactive digital books. “It has been shown by Lisenbee and Ford (2018) that interactive elements accelerate children's interest in reading along with their passion for the activity, which in turn makes them more likely to read books.” (Moutsinas et al., 2023, p. 173).

4. Adult involvement improves children’s learning with technology

Research works emphasize the fact that adult guidance plays an important role in the process of the use of digital media by young children. With the help of their parents and caretakers, children may acquire digital literacy by observing their technology use as well as discussing the content and helping the children adopt the same digital experiences with real learning. “Parents have a central role in guiding their children in the use of digital media so that children can utilize it positively.” (Hidayatussoalihah et al., 2025, p.7).

5. Technology is already integrated into children’s daily lives

The use of technology in the lives of young children is everywhere, whether at home or in the young childhood learning centers. Since many children have been utilizing technology and digital devices ever since their early years of life, educators and families ought to be concerned with how the use of technology can be deemed responsible with the aim of making learning and growth easier. “Despite this, most of them exposed their children to at least one digital supply during the first year of life and the number of supplies increases on a yearly basis.” (Gjelaj et al., 2020, p. 179).
