Students are working on learning vocabulary words for the week and developing their own sentences using the vocabulary words they have learned.
Merrill's Principles of Instruction:
Using this instructional design model for integrating technology in the classroom provides an outline of how information should be presented and where technology might be useful in enhancing the lesson. Merrill has four principles which are task-centered, activation, demonstration, application, and integration. In the task-centered stage, learning begins with a real-world problem that is relatable to the students. Then the activation principle beings where the learner's existing knowledge is activated and it helps the student connect what they already know to what they are learning. The demonstration stage provides students with multiple ways to interact with the information, such as visually and through storytelling, so students use different regions of the brain that allows them to increase their knowledge retention. During the application stage, learners apply the new information individually and learn from their mistakes. In the final stage of integration, the knowledge begins to integrate into the learner's brain by discussion, presentation, and reflection of the new knowledge they learned (May, 2018).
Tool: Kahoot
A formative assessment would take place several times throughout the lesson where students will use their iPad to answer questions about the vocabulary words they have learned. The technology tool being used to assess the students is Kahoot. Students will be provided with 3 sample sentences for the vocabulary word being assessed and asked which sentence uses the word in the correct way. This will be completed for each of the vocabulary words students have learned that day (The Digital Teacher, n.d.).
Tool: Kahoot
A summative assessment will take place at the end of the lesson where, once again, students will use their iPad and open the Kahoot technology tool. Students will be asked to pick the correct definition for each of the vocabulary words as well as the sentence that uses each word correctly. The assessment will consist of 6 questions total, 2 questions per vocabulary word that was learned during the lesson (The Digital Teacher, n.d.).
Tool: Kahoot
By using Kahoot for both the formative and summative assessments, student learning data can be collected and analyzed quickly. During the formative assessments, student understanding of what is being taught can be quickly assessed and the data will appear on the screen to show how many students answered the question correctly. This will allow the teacher to adjust the lesson accordingly and ensure that all students understand the material. Using the same tool for the summative assessment allows the teacher to compare the formative assessment results to the summative assessment results. Teachers can quickly compare if students understood the lesson better at the end or if more practice is needed based on the number of students that did not get the correct answer. This data happens in real-time and the tool organizes the data into groups so teachers can quickly see where the majority of the class is on their understanding (The Digital Teacher, n.d.).
