I wanted to start with organizing the project before all else. I did this first because I could not find anything and wanted to get a better overview. I worked in roughly 3 steps.
Step 1: Removing unused files
I installed a plugin (ProjectCleaner) to get a better overview of which files were used and which were unused. It says here 1,809 GB was unused, this turned out to be a shocking 18,669 GB of unused assets upon closer investigation.
After deleting the unused assets the project is 5,503 GB. This is still too much in my opinion and something to look into more in a later step. But at least the unused assets are out of the way. During this step the project folder shrunk 77,2% in size.
Step 2: Organizing the content folder
The folders were a mess are first. I had just downloaded and used what I needed from the asset store without ever reorganizing. So for step 2 I made a new folder structure and put the files in the right folders.Â
The naming conventions of some folders are very different. This is because the original creators of the assets used very different naming conventions. I use camel case for myself, but if the original creator of an asset used another style I didn't change that.
Below I've also made a map of my new folder structure with their color coding.
Step 3: Organizing the world outliner
The world outliner was the least bad cluttered. It's the best of the worst, but still enough to give me an aneurysm. So I organized it in a way that made more sense.
I divided the world outliner in Blueprints, Lighting, StaticMeshes, VFX and Volumes. Then I created subfolders in these main folders and categorized them in areas. This is a very nice improvement in my opinion.
