🤔 What are green screens? How can they support what we are learning?
Green screens offer a way for us and our students to keep exploring the world, answering big questions, and stretching ourselves creatively.
~Jennifer Gonzalez, author of Cult of Pedagogy
🧐 Let's see green screen in action and get some ideas!
Substitution: Students have their picture taken in front of a green screen. Teacher uses a green screen software to remove the background so that students can print and draw further around their photo.
Augmentation: Students have their picture taken in front of a green screen. Students select a photo to place behind them in order to place themselves "at the scene".
Modification: Students write and film a video in front of a green screen . They utilize the Chroma key effect to add clips and photos to the background of their video. The videos are then shown in class.
Redefinition: Students spend time studying famous historical figure. They write a short newscast interview pretending to be their figure. They utilize the green screen effect to add primary source clips and images to their backdrop. Student newscasts are then shown throughout the week on the school digital announcements. Schoolmates write and submit questions for the figures to respond to via a 2nd interview at a later date.
🤓 Let's Give it a Try!
Now it's your turn to create. Choose 1 of the tools below and learn how to use it. Create your own artifact with this tool. It should be something you would use with students or with coworkers. You'll add either your completed artifact or a link to this artifact to the Google Classroom Assignment below.
Using the green screen with images and/or GIFs is a great place to start if your apprehensive about video.
Must have an Apple mobile device (iPhone , iPad, or Mac) capable of running iMovie (free for Apple).
Must have access to a premium account you can use to create.
If you are looking for an easy-to-use app, I highly recommend DoInk. It is sadly only available for iPad and iPhone currently. It is also a one-time cost of $4.99. Learn more here. You are welcome utilize DoInk for this project, but due to its cost and limited access, I had not recommended as one of the 3 tools.
🤩 Let's Design for Students
If you choose to write a lesson plan, be sure to include:
Standards: What standards are you addressing?
Introduction: How will you hook students in?
Instruction: What content are you teaching?
Activity: What will students be doing or creating?
Conclusion: How will you wrap things up?
If you choose to build the lesson materials, be sure to include:
Standards: What standards are you addressing?
Teacher Materials: What will you be showing/teaching the students?
Student Materials: What directions, models, rubrics will students need?
Start with green screen still images. Have students write or talk about these images.
Utilize finger puppets or puppets on green sticks/straws and a read aloud a script.
Check out https://twitter.com/DoInkTweets (no account needed) for ideas that are little friendly.
Start with green screen mini-reports where students talk about a topic they've studied.
Utilize student work in the background (i.e. student created artwork).
