Founded in 1963, the UW IHDD is one of the few centers in the United States composed of three major federally funded core programs, a Eunice Kennedy Shriver Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC), a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), and the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND), combined in one comprehensive center.
The UW Center on Human Development and Disability (UW CHDD) is currently in the middle of becoming an Institute (UW IHDD). As part of that process, the IHDD hopes to create a stress-free environment for visitors, with a focus on improving internal navigation and aesthetic. Through research, ideation, prototyping, and evaluation, our team created tangible improvements to the navigation within IHDD.
Through this project, our team seeks to understand how the design of physical spaces, in and outside the building, correlates to feelings of discomfort and stress for visitors. Moreover, physical wayfinding is often an overlooked factor when it comes to experiential design and this opportunity will encourage us to apply human-centered design principles and practices in a domain where it is not commonly addressed.
