The Maddaloni Team "Neurobiology of Circadian and Seasonal Rhythms" at the Institute of Psychiatry and Neuroscience of Paris investigates how the brain detects seasonal changes in light and temperature and translates them into adaptive shifts in sleep and circadian rhythms. Using cutting-edge tools to image and manipulate genetically defined neural circuits in mice, we are mapping the pathways that link environmental cues to biological timing, and how their disruption contributes to psychiatric conditions such as bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and schizophrenia. Ultimately, our goal is to translate these discoveries into new circuit-based therapeutic strategies for disorders with seasonal exacerbation.
Research Projects
We use cutting-edge circuit techniques including viral circuit tracing, advanced microscopy, in vivo calcium and neurotransmitter sensor imaging, EEG/EMG based sleep monitoring, optogenetics and chemogenetics together with mouse behavior to understand how brain circuits detect seasonally relevant environmental stimuli and guide adaptive behaviors.
Most neurons release more than one neurotransmitter. We are interested in studying the biology of multi-transmitter neurons, focusing on neuromodulatory populations, and we study how they use different neurochemicals, how these signals are differentially routed across axonal branches, and how relevant environmental stimuli modify co-transmission properties.
