Comments for this answer How do you reduce Java logging boilerplate code? strongly suggest not to use loggers as instance member variables. I can think of two negative side-effects:

1) superclass logs with the subclass's logger

2) object cannot be serialized (unless marked transient)

But if serializing is not necessary and logging with subclass name is not a problem, is there anything else why it should be avoided? I think it reduces boilerplate code and avoids copy-paste errors while copying logger variable definition from one class to another. Even Spring framework (which I believe has very good coding standards) uses this method.

Plus from an abstract point of view, the logger really does belong to the class and can be shared between all instances, rather than each instance needing its own private copy, so it makes sense to declare it as static. Flipping your question around, what advantages does it have to making it non-static? (Being able to pass getClass() into the getLogger() call instead of passing in the class constant is the only thing I can think of, and that's such a tiny thing).

The only real situation I see for using a shared logging instance is something like the Apache commons HttpClient logger httpclient.wire which is shared between several classes for logging the contents of the requests and responses sent through the client. This particular logging situation does not log information for the actual implementation of the package, it logs information about the whole http "transaction".

Despite being one of the smallest competing teams, University of Nevada, Reno's logging sports team, Nevada Loggers, won big at the 73rd annual Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference's Logging Sports Exhibition, held Feb. 10-12 in Anderson, California.

By participating in the exhibition, the team showcased their passion for forestry, deepened their knowledge of forest science, connected with industry experts, and carried on the legacy and skills of America's lumberjacks, while earning recognition for their expertise.

The team also participated in other exhibition events, such as horizontal chop, in which they chopped a short log in half with an axe for time, as well as single and double bucking, in which they sawed a mounted log in half using a crosscut saw for time.

Nevada Loggers is advised by Assistant Professor and Whittell Forest & Wildlife Area Director Sarah Bisbing. The team welcomes new University student members, regardless of major, school year or experience level. For more information, contact Hunter Noble.

March 19, 2021 marks the 45th anniversary of the 1975-76 Puget Sound men's basketball team winning the NCAA D-II Championshionship. The Loggers beat Tennessee-Chattanooga, 83-74, to clinch the national title. In the championship game, Brant Gibler led the Loggers in scoring with 22 points, and Curt Peterson scored 20 points.

"The 1976 team is the standard of excellence that every Logger men's basketball team since has been trying to match," said Puget Sound men's basketball head coach Aubrey Shelton. Shelton '05 MAT '06 was an All-Northwest Conference honoree during his playing days with the Loggers. As a student-athlete, Shelton won two NWC titles and made a couple of NCAA D-III Sweet 16 appearance. "As a player, I played an alumni game against Rick Walker, one of the stars of the '76 team. I was warned by the upperclassmen that he had dropped 40 points the year before in the alumni game (he was in his mid-40's at the time). So the respect we had for those guys and that team was still present and we knew how good they were. Having the privilege to hear stories from former members of that team is always inspirational. Currently, every recruit I bring on campus I show the national championship banner and tell them our mission is to get another one. I also show them the Hall of Fame plaque of the 1976 team and say when we win the national title we ALL get in the hall of fame."

Buckman, an Army veteran who served two tours in Iraq, first heard of logger sports more than a decade ago when he was in his second deployment. He was wondering what to do after getting out of the Army and considering colleges in Montana. When he saw that FVCC had a logger sports club, the idea rooted somewhere deep in his mind.
