Here is the progression which I suggest for learning to multiply numbers:

• Learn your number facts. I would suggest this order 1 x, 0x, 10x, 5x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 8x, 6x, 7x then 9x
• Learn the division facts at the same time
• Use a number line to solve
• Use a grid method to solve
• Use an expanded column method
• Use a compact column method
• Use a compact column method, using decimal number
