Teaching Matters 2023:
Learning and Teaching Together

Acknowledgement of Country

The University of Tasmania recognises the Aboriginal history and culture of the land on which we meet for this conference. We pay our respects to the traditional owners and custodians of the land upon which all University of Tasmania campuses stand.

We acknowledge the contemporary Tasmanian Aboriginal community, who have survived invasion and dispossession, and continue to maintain their identity, culture and Indigenous rights.

We also recognise the value of continuing Aboriginal knowledge and cultural practice, which informs our understandings of history, culture, science and environment, the University's role in research and education, and in supporting the development of the Tasmanian community.

Welcome from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education

Dear Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 22nd annual Teaching Matters Conference – Learning and Teaching Together. Each year, Teaching Matters provides a wonderful opportunity to come together with colleagues from across the University to share new ideas, to challenge ourselves and to celebrate our successes.

The conference will open with a Keynote Address from Professor Alison Cook-Sather of Bryn Mawr College, USA. Professor Cook-Sather has worked with dozens of institutions across the globe on their pedagogical partnerships with students and we look forward to drawing on her insights to support our own students-as-partners initiatives.

We also hope you will join us as we discuss approaches to supporting student success and enhancing teaching quality with Professor Giselle Byrnes of Massey University in our Monday panel.

Our theme for Teaching Matters 2023 focusses attention on the opportunities that arise when we work in partnership - with students, colleagues and the community. The program also reflects this theme with a range of different ways to come together in our learning, from engaging with our communities of practice to listening to our students at the student forum.

Thank you to all our presenters this year. We look forward to hearing about your collaborations, partnerships and collective approaches to learning and teaching and the student experience.

Kind regards,
Professor Mitch Parsell
