Summary

The Study Buddies program is a peer learning support program for newly arrived international pathway students. At the International Pathway College, we find that our new students need a substantial amount of extra support to become independent learners. They are just starting to adjust to life in an unfamiliar environment while simultaneously navigating the university systems in a different learning culture and a foreign language. Underpinned by the University of Tasmania (UTAS) principle of student-centred teaching delivery, the Study Buddies program creates a supportive and inclusive learning environment for a diverse student cohort. During the first couple of weeks in class, the teacher takes a few minutes in every class for students to interact and get to know each other through ice breaking activities; then assists students to form Study Buddies groups. The study buddies remind each other of class times, assignments and homework tasks; check in on each other and work out problems (both personal and academic) together. Through interactions in and out of class, students form a sense of community that enhances their academic and personal growth. Surveys and other feedback demonstrate high levels of student satisfaction and appreciation for the program. They praise the sense of belonging it fosters and the valuable skills they acquire through peer mentoring. To date, two complete cycles of the Study Buddies program have been delivered. In this presentation we will provide a summary of the reflection and learnings gained, what improvements have been implemented, and how we envisage the future direction of the program.
