Summary

When considering the spectrum of education design within our institution, we faced important questions: What projects are other teams within the University engaged with in relation to educational design? How can we collaborate more effectively with each other? Are there projects or initiatives that intersect with our own work? In a bid to respond to these questions, the UTAS Educational Design Community of Practice was formed in February 2022. Whilst other long-standing communities of practice already exist at UTAS, our dedicated group recognised the need for a community focused solely on pedagogy.

Initially, the Community of Practice membership consisted of professional staff working as Educational Designers within Digital Futures. The Educational Design Community of Practice has since grown to include staff from other areas of the University such as the library, academic skills, and academic staff with a shared interest in practical pedagogy.

Our Community of Practice convenes monthly through one-hour online meetings and discusses a wide variety of topics related to educational design. Recent discussions have covered subjects such as: assessment design, feedback literacy, video pedagogy, learning activity design, and the utilisation of generative artificial intelligence to shape unit designs. Between online gatherings, we share resources and engage in asynchronous collaboration in our dedicated Microsoft Teams site.

In this presentation, we’ll discuss our community’s goals and plans for moving forward. We’ll also provide guidance on how to get involved for those who have a further interest.
