Hello!
My name is Carolyn Henry
I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Iowa State University and am currently attending the University of Iowa for my Master of Arts in Teaching with a focus in Art Education (Graduating May 2024).
This blog is dedicated to my growth as an art educator. It catalogs art lessons I have implemented with students, debriefs of these processes and results, and includes reflections on student experiences. There are also sections detailing my experiments with different art mediums, all in the hopes of broadening my artistic scope to create engaging art projects in my classroom.
Blog Contents
The first tab gives you a little glimpse into my Student Teaching experiences.
The next two tabs are dedicated to art workshops for both secondary and elementary-aged students. I taught a mix of middle and high school students during the School of the Arts (SoTA) and 2nd-grade students in the Saturday Morning Art Workshops (SMAW). Lessons debriefs, outcomes, and student project images can be found in each tab.
This blog also has six pages dedicated to material and concept exploration. For these projects, I was primarily the student so the content is more geared toward personal project outcomes and experiences, as well as reflections on how I may use the technique in my classroom. The materials and concepts include installation art, textile art, digital fabrication, paper treatments, printmaking, and glass fusing.
In the last three tabs, you can find a mock online lesson I made for visual journaling, a presentation on using PearDeck in the classroom, my Google Certified Educator certificate.
My Teaching Philosophy
My classroom is a place where diversity is valued and incorporated into the curriculum. I believe in providing students with the frameworks they need to succeed while allowing them freedom of choice in many of their projects. A welcoming, comfortable classroom is a classroom in which students can thrive. That's why I create an environment for individual work and collaborative experiences. I value the unique learning styles that students bring into my classroom and embrace them rather than force them into a predetermined mold.
