We are all citizens in many communities, from our families, to our country, to the digital world. We have rights and responsibilities in each of those communities. How we interact with each other in those communities will determine what what kind of community it is. Will it be dangerous or safe? Will it be just okay, or will it be a cool place to be? Will it be a place you want to be?
The digital community is us and it is up to us to determine the type of place it will be by how we interact and behave in the at community and by what we give to that community.
What does it mean to be a digital citizen? Students will learn that they are daily making decisions online and off that build or tear down community. They will research community and one of 3 digital citizenship topics (digital communication, etiquette or law - 3 of Ribble’s 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship) and learn how to become a Substantial Citizen in a Digital World - a positive, caring, and community building agent of change online.
3 PROJECTS, 1 PRODUCT – Together, the class will create a website in help our 5th and 6th graders become Substantial Citizens in a Digital World. Each student will create one page in our collaborative Google Site. On that page each will embed Projects 1 and 2 as well as other information:
Time at the end of the unit will allow the students to visit the webpages of their classmates. They will give positive (practicing DC) feedback to 2 (one from each other topic) of the students’ whose pages they visit.
