Kia ora!
Te Manu Taupua is a Mana Whenua owned and operated business launched in 2018, founded by Dane Tumahai (Ngāti Whatua Ōrakei) and Paora Puru (Te Waiohua).
Our Journey
Te Manu Taupua is an authority for cultural content in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland, the land loved by the many.
Dane is a 7th generation storyteller of the chief who gifted the land to build the city we know today as Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). In 2018, we saw an opportunity to tell authentic stories about the journey of Ngāti Whatua Ōrakei, our people and the place which we call home. The experiences that Te Manua Taupua offer today are an extension of the values which we have grown up with, of sharing manaakitanga and whanaugatanga, values of hospitality and forming shared connection and belonging.
We gain our authority through our tūpuna, ancestors who roamed the lands and navigated the seas before us, with deep and resonating connection to mountains, oceans, skies, forests and the energies contained within them. Directly compared to our ancestral heritage, our business reflects the grace and dignity of Te Manu Taupua, the leader and sentry bird who represents both the mind and heart of the flock, who lead and guide its flock of birds within the “V” formation.
How we share our values with you
We appreciate manuhiri (visitors) that come with an open heart and mind. The stories we share are local and personal to us and our iwi. When you experience storytelling with us, you arrive as a visitor and leave as whanau.
Te Manu Taupua has a clear focus on delivering impact for our whānau, hapū and iwi.
TMT is a social enterprise model where as an entrepreneurial business we aim to deliver commercial success and make impact in terms of uplifting the tapu and mana of our people by creating sustainable futures, aiding whānau, hapū and iwi prosperity.
We partner with leaders to help them understand and enhance their identity as an Aotearoa organisation and build meaningful relationships to be able to contribute to the Maori economy globally.
Our vision is clearly connected to generational success and we work to culturally empower educational providers to support tamariki in their care to identify and be proud of who they are and where they come from. We achieve this through building cultural empowerment in the organisation and its people and through delivery of specialised programmes to enhance educational outcomes.
In our commercial activities we are focused on rangatahi learning the skills to be hosts to visitors of our city and take their place as Ahikaa to maintain our prescence.
