My name is Mario and I am the English Language Assistant for school term 2023/24.
During my stay here at EOI Roquetas de Mar I have had the opportunity to share, through the teaching of English, the culture of Ireland with the students here which has been a great pleasure.
Discussing the differences and similarities in Irish culture as well as other topics with the students has been greatly beneficial and uplifting.
Below, I have listed some of the presentations and discussion topics we have covered so far this term.
In this presentation which was given at the beginning of the school term, allowed me to introduce myself and the island of which I was travelling from.
We discussed several themes; the island of Ireland, how Ireland is split into two states, the troubles in the North of Ireland as well as the ongoing issues surrounding governance.
This gave us an opportunty to examine historical and contemporary issues in relation to Ireland.
In this presentation we looked at the significance of the national Thanksgiving celebration in the United States.
Inicially discussing the origins of the tradition historically, we then looked at the manner in which it is celebrated, analysing what foods are typically eaten and how people spend their time during the holiday.
The presentation was followed by a quiz and a general discussion in which students put forward their own knowledge of the issue or asked questions pertaining to the topic.
In terms of the topic of Halloween, I opted to highlight the celtic origins of the tradition, discussing the old superstitions and ceremonies of 'Samhain', including myths of Celtic Ireland that have shaped the custom.
We moved on to examine how Halloween is celebrated in the modern context in Ireland and elsewhere.
This was also followed by a quiz in which the students were split into groups and competed to see who could get the most questions correct.
This presentation was interesting and fun for the students and myself alike. I outlined the main staples of Irish cuisine - Stew, the Irish fry (breakfast), wheaten bread etc as well as some of Irelands most famous products such as Guinness.
We found it interesting in comparing the gastronomy of Ireland and Spain as a small number of the students had visited Ireland previously.
The school organised a christmas party for the students across all departments.
Food and non-alcoholic drinks were provided by the school and different activities were organised.
There was also Christmas hampers which were raffled off to students.
Carols were sung in English, French and German.
I gave this presentation to all levels within the English department. I introduced Irish national sports to the students, some of whom had never seen sports such as Gaelic football & Hurley being played.
It was a great example of cultural exchange and the presentation was then followed by a quiz. Each group was invited to divide into teams and competed to see which group would ascertain the most correct answers.
The English department organised a speed-dating communicative exercise in which students had the opportunity to speak to other people in different classes.
Students were separated into two levels of English and spent around 5-15 minutes speaking to one another.
I presented the topic of St.Patrick to the students across all levels.
We examined who St.Patrick was in terms of his roots and how he brought Christianity to Ireland as well as moving on to look at how St.Patrick´s day is celebrated in Ireland and other places around the world with significant Irish immigration.
We encouraged students to wear an item of green clothing for the occasion and marked the day with a staff photo sporting green clothes and other accessories.
We finished up each presentation with a quiz and some questions in which the engagement from the students was always great.

Hello, my name is Jerod, and I'm an American from Ohio. I am the English Language Assistant for the academic year of 2024-25. Being in Spain has taught me a lot, and hopefully the students learned a lot from me as well. Here are some things I have done with students throughout the year.
I spoke to students of all levels and different classes about how I and many others celebrate Thanksgiving and traditions associated with the holiday. We spoke about the history and a little bit of the darker history behind the holiday as well. Many students were interested in the different kinds of food eaten. On Thanksgiving, we had a Thanksgiving dinner in Aguadulce with turkey, mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, etc. (which was really good).
Does the United States have a cuisine? Some may argue no... however many different regions in the U.S. eat different foods or certain foods are more popular. Of course, there may be foreign influences by immigrants. For example, Mexico has a huge influence on the cuisine eaten in the U.S. due to many immigrants and their descendants, as well as proximity. Many students then taught me about Spanish cuisine and popular foods and drinks from Spain.
I learned that Christmas is a very important holiday in Spain just like in the U.S. However, they have their differences too. We talked about Santa Claus and how Spain now kind of has "two" Christmases: Christmas Day and 3 Kings Day. Talked about the parties, traditions, and other festivities associated with the holiday season.
After the Christmas/winter break, we talked about how Americans tend to celebrate New Year's Eve aka NYE. We discussed the seminaries and differences with the holiday in Spain and in the U.S. I was shocked to learn how late Spainards might stay out this night haha. And I got to experience it here in Spain in Almería city.
Since Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio aka Bad Bunny released his album "DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOTos" on January 5th, 2025, I decided to give a presentation on Puerto Rico. Not many people really know a lot about Puerto Rico because it is a small island, but people do know famous Puerto Ricans like Bad Bunny, Don Omar, Daddy Yankee, J. Lo, etc. I got some help from a Puerto Rican friend from my university and researched the different topics I wanted to talk about and discuss. Puerto Rico is legally a part of the U.S. as a "Commonwealth". Benito's new album was meant to be very inspired by Puerto Rico and its culture. It was an album of love for his island, and the problems it faces.
If I remember correctly, I genetically have a little bit of Irish in me haha, but no I'm not really Irish. Though, many Americans are Irish American and have roots there. Due to many events and colonization from Britain, many Irish people had to flee and escape the man-made famine. We discussed the fact that this holiday actually originated in the U.S. from those Irish Americans celebrating their Irish pride. Nowadays, it's a very festive holiday to come together for everyone and have fun, but it's also important to remember the history of this holiday.
Since Roquetas de Mar has a large tourism sector of its economy, I decided to discuss the topic of tourism in the U.S. Then, for an activity students planned their own trips to the U.S. Where would you go?
We talked about Easter and Holy week in the U.S. and the similarities and differences between them and Semana Santa in Spain. I learned a lot about Spanish traditions and the best Samana Santa desserts. I ate some amazing torrijas at La Gamba de Oro in la Urba near my apartment.
