Response Options
Response options for the books you choose from the list are listed below. Use a different response option for each book. All word counts are the minimum requirement.
1. Create a new book jacket design for the book, either virtual or on paper. Include the following:
o Front cover: The title and author along with your illustration for the book.
o Inside front flap: Write your own description of the setting and a short summary of the book (150 words).
o Inside back flap: Write your own brief biography of the author. Include awards won and a small photo (100 words).
o Back cover: Include one interesting paragraph from the story that will cause others to want to read the book (150 words).
2. Write 3 diary entries that one of the characters would write which include details about the story. Diary entries should be at least 150 words each and can be typed or handwritten.
3. Create a sculpture of a character. Use modeling clay or papier-mâché to sculpt a character. Write a description of who the character is and why he or she is important (250 words). Bring it to school during the first week of classes, or by Friday, September 8th.
4. Create a book trailer (at least 1 minute 30 seconds but not longer than 3 minutes) that will make others want to read the book too. Use the video creation tool of your choice.
8th Option Only:
5. Character Analysis Essay. Write a 500 word essay analyzing one of the main characters of the novel you read. Use the following questions to guide you, but your essay should be of your own creation.
Did this character grow or change over the course of the novel? If they did, explain how, and whether this change was positive or negative. If not, explain why you think the author kept the character static throughout the course of the novel.
Use STEAL to analyze the character's personality and traits. (Speech, Thoughts, Effect on Others, Actions, Looks)
Did all of the character's choices make sense? Was the character internally consistent? (when looked at as a whole, did all of their actions and choices make sense? Were all of the choices the author made with this character justified?)
