Initiation Process

Undergraduate engineering students at UNM are eligible for Tau Beta Pi membership if they are in the top 1/8th of their junior class or 1/5th of their senior class. Graduate students may also be eligible provided they are at least halfway through their graduate degree (contact us for more details). Undergraduates meeting these requirements should receive eligibility letters about halfway into the semester (Fall or Spring). That letter should include details for information sessions in which eligible students can learn about our chapter and ask questions.

After those information sessions, each eligible student must complete an simple application with details for our membership database, submit a resume, and sign up for an initiation task. Currently, our initiation tasks involve cleaning and polishing our Bent, the monument by the southeast entrance of the Centennial Engineering Center that symbolizes our organization's principles.

As long the initiates have all attended at least one of the initiation tasks or made the proper arrangements, they may then become official Tau Beta Pi members by attending our initiation ceremony. The ceremony is generally held at 5 or 6 PM on a weekend night and is mandatory for joining. If an initiate cannot attend the ceremony, they should immediately contact the officers to determine their options. Immediately after the ceremony, a banquet is held to welcome the new members to our chapter.
