Singapore is experiencing a longer wet and rainy season this year mainly because of La Nina, monsoonal winds and local effects. La Nina is a weather pattern which is caused by the changes in atmospheric pressure and sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Trade Winds and ocean current intensify causing upwelling around the maritime continent. This would result in the concentration of moisture supply which leads to a rainy and wet season. The rainy season caused the rise of temperature to 35 degree Celsius on some days, fall of several trees and thicker and heavier rainfall in Singapore. Additionally, it also caused the occurrence of flash floods which concerns PUB because Singapore is experiencing more intense and frequent rainstorms whilst the country is land-scare and the drains cannot be widened and deepen letting it be more prone to flood. To prevent the flood, PUB implemented many prevention measures like building retention ponds, upgrading drainage infrastructure and setting minimum platform level. On the other hand, the public can also play a part in building flood resilience by stop littering in canals and waterways.
The first takeaway is about the two monsoon seasons in Singapore which would depends tourist trip if they are travelling to Singapore. The first monsoon season is the northeast monsoon which occurs from December to early march and brings heavy rainfall to the country. The second monsoon season is the southwest monsoon which occurs from June to September and brings strong winds during predawn and midday.
The Second takeaway is knowing more about La Nina which is currently occurring in Singapore. La Nina is known as “little girl” in Spanish. It is a complex weather pattern which occurred due to the prevailing winds and ocean current and is one of the factors affecting climate. It would result in cooler temperature, heavy rain and flooding in countries like Singapore, Indonesia and Australia thus explaining the current rainy season in Singapore.
The last takeaway is understanding more on the trade winds which is also known as Easterlies on the world's weather and climate. During weather patterns like La Nina, trade winds would strengthen and get even stronger than usual, causing unusual cold conditions and bringing more rain in the tropical pacific thus would concern tourist in central and south America, parts of Australia and tropical island like Singapore. Trade winds are important as it acts as a steering flow for storms and showers. It also keeps warm water confined around the maritime continent and keep countries like Singapore much warmer than countries in the east.
