Date of Published: 6 November 2020
Summary:
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, many countries had implemented travel restrictions and stricter measures in order to prevent spreading of the Covid-19 disease. People could not travel out of their country and as a result, this led to increased desire to travel out of their country for leisure activities and more in a long run. In November 2020, the Singapore Tourism Board had decided to resume the “Cruise to Nowhere” for the residents since the Covid-19 cases had decreased significantly as compared to during the outbreak period. However, the capacity allowed on this cruise had been reduced by half whereby only 1,700 passengers could be on the cruise while protective measures must still be followed. Also, all passengers must be tested negative for the Covid-19 test before boarding. Many residents were excited and have book for the cruise immediately after the announcement of opening of the “Cruise to Nowhere”. It is the first travel option for them since the implementation of travel restrictions as travel bubble with other countries were also delayed. In this cruise, there are various entertainment facilities available but time slot will need to be booked in advance due to capacity limit.
KEY TAKeaWAYS:
The first takeaway is about the internal factors of motivations of the passengers. In this article, one of the passengers had mentioned that this is the first time his family and he could travel since the start of the pandemic and they want to take a short break. This explained to me the motivation of the passengers that triggers them to rush to book the cruise is not only because it is the first travel option for them to satisfy their desire to travel out of Singapore in the past few months but also to seek for relaxation.
The second takeaway is about the impacts of travel barriers such as the travel restrictions implemented and how tourism industry cope with it. Due to travel restrictions, tourism industry was hit badly as people were not allowed to travel around. From this article, the Singapore Tourism Board had said that this cruise trip is a round cruise trip where the cruise would not stop at any of the port. This would then allow the cruises to resume operations while abiding to travel restrictions. Although the cruise will leave from Singapore and end its’ trip in Singapore, passengers still feel satisfaction for desire to travel through the various entertainment facilities on the cruises.
The third takeaway from this article is knowing the importance of geography of transport. Without transport, people would not be able to travel around. From this article, one of the passengers had said that he is looking forward to exploring more with cruises as sailing is the second-best option during this pandemic. Due to travel restrictions, airlines could not operate as flights are not allowed. Hence, other transportation such as cruises are essential as they could satisfy the desire of the passenger to “travel” out of Singapore although it is a round cruise trip.
