Introduction and Overview
CoinNest is a cryptocurrency exchange app that enables Nigerian users to send, receive, and exchange cryptocurrency while navigating seamlessly through the app.
CoinNest allows users to buy and sell cryptocurrency in their local currency, and get access to beginner-friendly courses and resources that would get users started in the world of cryptocurrency.
The goal was to demystify the ambiguity associated with cryptocurrency trading by familiarizing users with the crypto-lingo and also allowing them to trade easily with their local currency in a bid to encourage frequent trading.
Project type: Team project
Role: Research, UX design, visual design, and prototype
Timeline: 4 weeks | March 25 - April 20, 2022
The Challenge
As years go by, cryptocurrency has maintained the outlook of inaccessibility, especially for Nigerians due to the overwhelming apps and articles filled with ambiguous crypto-jargons making it difficult to learn and arduous to navigate.
Our job was to create an app that would proffer a solution to the aforementioned challenges.
The Solution
A cryptocurrency exchange app that is a convenient choice for cryptocurrency newbies and also a great choice for trading.
An app that features an engaging, easy-to-use, and highly intuitive design.
Design Goals
Easy Navigation
Facilitate trading in local currencies
A proper integration for easy deposit and withdrawal
A learning platform that is devoid of any ambiguous jargon for newbies to be properly introduced into the world of cryptocurrency.
Design Process
Our design process consisted of four phases; discover, define, ideate and design.
Discover
The discover phase was divided into four subphases in order to get a clear picture of the design problem.
Stakeholder Interview
After receiving the design brief, we conducted a stakeholder interview in order to have complete clarity about the scope of the problem.
User Survey
We sent out questionnaires to 50+ people aged between 18-40 using google forms. The purpose of the survey was to observe patterns in our potential users and the challenges they experience with existing crypto apps.
User Interview
We conducted an interview with two users from the user survey in order to gain an in-depth understanding of our potential users and their wants and needs, and how they perceive crypto-trading in general.
The interview helped us narrow down our main competitors and facilitated the creation of our user personas.
Competitor Analysis
In order to learn about the current market of cryptocurrency exchange products, we analyzed direct and indirect competitors. The competitors we analyzed were: Binance, Buycoins, Coinbase, KuCoin, and Quidax.
Define
User Persona
We created two user personas of our prospective users based on the data gathered from the research.

How Might We?
After identifying the design challenge and the target users through research, we proceeded to translate the identified challenges into opportunities for design by brainstorming solution ideas.
We came up with “How Might We” statements:
How might we help Nigerians trust USDT traders to buy cryptocurrency?
How might we help Nigerians understand the crypto market enough to be motivated to trade?
How might we help Nigerians not feel overwhelmed by the crypto lingo and interface?
How might we help Nigerians feel safe about their crypto app considering the ban on cryptocurrency?
Having written out our HMW statements, we proceeded to brainstorm solutions to the specific problems. The potential solutions were to design an app:
That allows users to complete their transactions in their preferred local currency allowing users to trade with confidence and ease.
That allows users to learn about cryptocurrency trading by taking courses and reading articles on cryptocurrency to keep them up to speed on the trend.
With a simple interface that is easy to navigate and a dictionary feature that allows users to find the meaning of words without having to leave the current page they are on and the app altogether.
That allows users to switch modes between learning and trading modes and set the default mode on launch to enable users to feel safe about having the app on their devices.
User Flows
Next, we created user flows for major actions to allow us to access the app’s ease of use and help us optimize the user experience. Some of the flows we created are as follows:
Trading: Deposit
Trading: Buying

Design
Following the completion of the discover, define, and ideate phases, my team moved on to the design phase. Since we were able to come up with the important features from the “How Might We” statements and the user flow, we went ahead to create a mood board for our project.
After that, we designed our low-fidelity wireframes. In order to make this easy, each member of the team was assigned different screens.

Reflections
The project was entirely collaborative. It was a challenging but great experience given that we didn't have prior experience with working on design projects let alone working in a team. We all had different skills and strengths and this was advantageous as everyone gave their all.
I personally learnt a lot throughout the course of this project. My collaboration and communication skills were greatly improved. I also got to learn a bit about crypto-trading as I barely had any solid knowledge about it. The importance of empathy and proper research was reinforced at every step of the project.
I thoroughly enjoyed every part of the design process and I realized that I enjoy working in teams even though it’s not entirely rosy.
