Biography
Dr. Tarek Hassan Selim has more than 30 years of experience in university administration, teaching, research, and service. He is the first President of the University of East London (UEL) at the European Universities in Egypt. He teaches at the University of London LSE Program in New Capital City. He has been visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, faculty affiliate to the Institute for Strategy at Harvard Business School, and professor of economics at the American University in Cairo for more than 20 years.
His experience at AUC includes vice-president of the university senate, chairman of economics department, chairman of the university’s annual conference, the president budget commission, provost review board, business research council, executive education programs, Triple crown accreditation, and tenured professor of economics. He received Best Research Professor, Best Teaching Professor in Executive MBA, Senate Outstanding Service Award, and Distinguished Service Contribution Award and Plaque.
He served as senior economics expert and member of the AI commission at the World Economic Forum, Switzerland., He has been consultant to many international organizations and think tanks including the EU Commission, USAID, IDRC Canada, India ICRIER, Brookings Institution, Ford Doundation, Dubai Economic Council, and others. Dr. Selim has been advisor to three government ministries in Egypt.
His research include more than 100 publications in highly recognized academic journals, book chapters, and technical papers. He received the Lifetime Research Fellow Award from the Economic Research Forum of the Middle East and has been member of the global editorial board at MIT Technology Review.
His consulting and research experience has been within a diverse range of markets and industries, including automotive, cement, steel, natural gas, petroleum, food processing, carpets, pharmaceuticals, gold, marble and granite, tourism, education, telecom, solar energy, and nuclear power generation. His work has covered many countries such as China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, and others.
Dr. Selim has a PhD in economics from George Washington University, MBA from Johns Hopkins University, and MS in economics from Iowa State University. He has MS in industrial engineering and BS (Hon.) in mechanical engineering from the American University in Cairo. He holds certificate programs from MIT, Harvard, Georgetown, Oxford, Imperial College, and others.
