Biography
Academic Leadership & Faculty Appointments
Dr. Tarek Hassan Selim brings over 30 years of experience in university administration, teaching, research, and service. He served as the inaugural President of the University of East London (UEL) at the European Universities in Egypt. He has taught at the University of London’s LSE Program in the New Administrative Capital and has been a Professor of Economics and Business at the American University in Cairo (AUC) for more than twenty years. His leadership roles at AUC include serving as Vice President of the University Senate, Provost Review Board, Chairman of the Economics Department, and Chairman of the University Annual Conference and University Budget Committee.
Research Excellence & Recognition
A prolific scholar, Dr. Selim has published over 100 works in academic journals, book chapters, and technical papers. He is a recipient of the Lifetime Research Fellow Award from the Economic Research Forum of the Middle East and has served as a member of the Global Editorial Board at MIT Technology Review and Editor in Chief of the Journal of Business and Economics Research (JBER). His academic contributions have earned him several of AUC’s highest honors, including the Best Research Professor and Best Teaching Professor in the Executive MBA program as well as the Senate Outstanding Achievement Award and Distinguished Chair Award and Plaque.
Global Research Affiliations and Outreach
Dr. Selim’s research influence extends to global leading institutions where he has served as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and as Faculty Affiliate of the Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) Network at Harvard Business School. He is also a founding member of the Alfred P. Sloan Industry Studies Association at the University of Pittsburgh and has furthered global economic discourse through visiting scholarships at Tsinghua University in China and ICRIER in India.
International Consultancy & Policy Advising
Dr. Selim serves on the global expert council and member of the AI Commission at the World Economic Forum (WEF). His consultancy portfolio spans a diverse array of sectors—including renewable energy, nuclear technology, telecommunications, and manufacturing—across markets in Asia, Africa, Middle East, and the Americas. He has advised premier international organizations such as the EU Commission, USAID, and the Brookings Institution, and has served as a Senior Economic Advisor to the Egyptian Competition Authority and three Government Ministries in Egypt (Finance, Economy & Planning, Power).
Multidisciplinary Educational Background
Dr. Selim possesses a multidisciplinary academic background across engineering, business, and economics. He holds a PhD in Economics from George Washington University, an MBA from Johns Hopkins University, an MS in Economics from Iowa State University, and an MS in Industrial Engineering from AUC. His foundation degree is a BS (Honors) in Mechanical Engineering from AUC. Furthermore, he holds advanced certificate programs from MIT, Harvard, Georgetown, Oxford, and Imperial College London.
