Biography

Dr. Selim has more than 30 years of experience in the fields of economic policy, business strategy, investment analysis, and development impact. His career has covered the economics of markets, industry, trade and competition, energy & environment, technology and innovation, and cost-benefit analysis of investments and development projects, as well as strategic drivers of competitiveness in emerging economies.

Dr. Selim serves on the Global Expert Council of the World Economic Forum, Davos, Switzerland. He has been Professor and former Chair of the Department of Economics in the School of Business at the American University in Cairo. He has been visiting research fellow at MIT Industrial Performance Center at the Sloan School of Management, as well as faculty affiliate to the Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) Network at Harvard Business School. 

He is a founding member of the Alfred P. Sloan Industry Studies Association at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a Lifetime Research Fellow of the Economic Research Forum (ERF) in the Middle East and has been Senior Economic Advisor to the Egyptian Competition Authority. Dr. Selim has published near 100 research publications in economics, business, and development. 

He has been economic consultant at international organizations and think tanks, as well as government ministries and institutes in the Middle East and emerging markets. His work has covered China, India, Brazil, Mexico, Emirates, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Sudan, and others. 

His consulting and research experience has been within a diverse range of markets and industries, including automotive, cement, steel, natural gas, petroleum, food processing, carpets, pharmaceuticals, gold, marble and granite, tourism, education, telecom, solar energy, and nuclear power generation. 

Dr. Selim has a PhD in economics from George Washington University, MBA from Johns Hopkins University, MS in economics from Iowa State University, MS in industrial engineering and BS (Hon.) in mechanical engineering from the American University in Cairo. He holds certificated programs from MIT, Harvard, Georgetown, Oxford, Imperial College, and others.
