Rhytisma americanum

This tar spot is often confused with Rhytisma acerinum. When trying to figure out which tar spot your tree has consider the host tree. Rhytisma acerinum is only known to attack Norway maples (Acer platanoides).
Rhytisma punctatum
This is a native fungus to North America that attacks trees such as: Big-leaf maple (Acer macrophyllum), mountain maple (Acer spicatum), silver maple (Acer saccharinum) and striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum).
This tar spot is easy to identify as the stromata are small and close together. Another easy identifying characteristic is the area around the stromata will keep its color even after the leaf changes color.
