Our work is guided by three core values that shape everything we do.
♻️ Sustainability
We recycle, upcycle and compost, using what is available locally.
We share resources and knowledge, holding skills communally rather than individually.
We use our space carefully, from the beds to the shed to our shared tools and materials.
🫶 Community
We build strong relationships with our neighbours and are active within the wider the Liberties community.
We take part in local events and festivals, including the Liberties Festival and Culture Date.
We run market days at We Love Markets in the Digital Hub to raise funds and connect with more people.
We host workshops, tours and visits, especially for youth groups and local interest groups such as those focused on heritage and history.
🐝 Ecology
We do not use pesticides or chemicals.
We maintain micro‑habitats that support biodiversity and leave some areas wild for pollinators.
We respect the natural processes in the soil and the many organisms that make it alive.
Before Bridgefoot Street Park was built, the site was a fenced-off, derelict space used mainly as a dumping ground. Richie Taplin, a resident of Oliver Bond flats, began using the space to grow food, developing community allotments.
In 2016, Dublin City Council announced plans to redevelop the area. Residents argued that the Liberties needed more green space, as it has some of the lowest levels of green space in Ireland. They campaigned for a public park where children could play and the community could gather, and…they won! The park was designed in collaboration with residents and a section was set aside for a community garden.
The garden was later named Taplin’s Fields in memory of Richie, who sadly passed away in 2019 before the park and garden opened.
🏅In 2025, Taplin's Fields was shortlisted as The Irish Times “Ireland’s Greenest Place” and received the “Working with Nature Award for Pollinators” from Powerscourt Estate.
📺 The garden was also featured in RTE’s Nationwide, Homegrown and BBC's Gardener's Corner.
You can read more about us also in the Liberty, the Dublin Inquirer and Culture Date with Dublin 8.
Every quarter, we set up a stall at We Love Market in the Digital Hub, usually on the last Sunday of the month. It’s a simple way for us to share awareness about our garden, meet neighbours, and welcome new volunteers. We also bring small treats: food made from what we grow - such as nettle pesto and jam, plus seedlings and plants to help with fundraising.
Beyond the market, we take part in local events like the Liberties Festival and Culture Date with Dublin 8. We collaborate with artists from NCDA, host composting workshops, and run propagation sessions to help people learn new skills and connect with nature.
Keep an eye on the news & events section for upcoming dates.
