Taplin’s Fields is a communal community garden located inside Bridgefoot Street Park in Dublin 8. It covers roughly 1,000 square metres of growing beds where volunteers come together to grow food, learn from one another and build community in the heart of the Liberties.
The garden is unusual as it’s completely open and not gated. Since opening in May 2022, it has grown steadily, with a dedicated group of volunteers who look after it throughout the year. If you’d like to get involved, read more below! Read more here.
Opening hours may change, so check our Instagram or this website for updates.
Just show up on Saturdays! That's it!!
Our community garden doesn't have allotments - the space is shared, and everyone works together on whatever tasks are needed on the day. Everyone is welcome to suggest a project or idea.
Work varies depending on the season. Tasks include weeding, composting, maintaining structures such as bed edging, mulching, sowing, planting, and…of course, harvesting!
When we harvest, we share the produce among the volunteers who worked that day. Some produce may also be used for our market stall.
The garden is volunteer‑run and receives no funding from Dublin City Council, so we also organise market days and apply for grants. You are welcome to help with this side of things, too.
After you’ve joined at least once, you can ask to be added to our WhatsApp group for updates and you are welcome to our monthly meetings. The garden operates with a flat structure, supported by a small committee. Roles include: Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and PR Officer.
We grow seasonal fruit and vegetables as well as native pollinator-friendly flowers and trees.
Some staples you can commonly find around harvest season include potatoes, tomatoes, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, lettuce, onions, garlic, and beans! 🍅🧅🥬
At the start of each year, we plan the garden and assign crops to different areas. We grow plants that suit the Irish climate but also like to experiment! Volunteers are welcome to make suggestions.
We also keep some areas wild to support biodiversity and pollinators. 🐝🌸🦋
