But I was excited (and still am) because I believe this represents a huge step when it comes to the unity of the Church. In John 17, Jesus specifically prays that the church would be unified, one in him. And yet 2000 years after that prayer was prayed we are more divided than ever. This is a complete travesty for the Church. But here you have a young Catholic writing songs that are being sung by Evangelical Protestants around the world in praise to the one God that we both worship. If there was ever a reason to hope for a greater unity within the Church, this is it.

So celebrate with me that we have so much in common with our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters that we can sing the same songs to give praise to the Father who created all things, the Son who redeemed us by his death and resurrection, and the Spirit that leads us into the new creation life! There is plenty of time to work out the doctrinal differences later, but for now it is time to sing!

well, I used to be evangelical. I really admire the love in the letters of this post. I think you were not really aware of the basis of the catholic faith. If you read the Bible more carefully you will realize that God was not angry when people gave praise or reverence to His people. God was angry when people made other gods which of course were false, but there were people kneeling in front of David and there is a promise to Josue that his brothes would kneel in front of him. Even the Holy Spirit gave praise to Mary. We only find the problem when somebody knelt in front of the angel to worship him as He is not God and he let him know hits fact. The problem is not kneeling, is not intercession, is changing God for a false god and we tend to do this normally when we worship ourselves or money. There are important things like communion or confession that people need to come back to as these were gifts from the Lord and I dont think any gift from the Lord was given just because.

As I have been in self-quarantine, there have been a few songs that have stuck with me that I would like to share. They are not hype-me-up songs, they are honestly not even happy songs, but they are beautiful pieces of art where the artist, whether they know it or not, express a strong desire for God. I wanted to share these songs because they have helped me reflect on my own desire for Christ, and even when I am in the darkest moments of my life, God is there with me.

We love music and movies! They connect with us in whatever mood we may be in and have the power to reinforce where we're at, or move us somewhere else. Music and movies from a Christian perspective are intended to help us grow closer in our relationship to Jesus. The following links to Christian based songs and music videos will, hopefully do just that.

Dana Catherine is a Catholic Christian singer/songwriter whose unique sound combines her magnetic voice and compelling melodies with lyrics that reflect the vulnerability of heartfelt prayer, making each of her songs more captivating than the last.

I launched a Kickstarer that raised over $10,000 so we could do a whole record. I dug back through my repertoire to find songs to add, that were probably Flamy songs all along. Before we knew it we had 10 songs.

All of these songs are with secular intent, considering they do not involve God. They are songs that connect people in our consubstantial state with one another (consubstantial is being used here in the terminology given by Burke, who believed that people were individual and yet of the same substance.)

Lancaster native Sarah Hart is excited to be returning next month to her familial and musical roots for the first time in more than a decade to perform a collection of her contemporary Catholic Christian songs at a live concert.

A prolific writer, she has composed music for television, film and audiobooks, and her songs have been recorded by notables such as Amy Grant, Celtic Woman, Matt Maher and The Newsboys. Among her credits are a musical, Bernadette of Lourdes, based on the life of St. Bernadette, a Mass of St. Mary Magdalene and the publication of four retreat books.

But as soon as the Mass started, I felt like I had stepped into a no-man's land suspended between Catholicism and some vague form of Protestantism that I as a convert had never seen before. It wasn't that the music was strange to me. I grew up with contemporary Christian music around the house and listened to it on the radio (when I wasn't listening to classical music or Latin dance music). So I knew the songs. The church was full of high schoolers and Baby Boomers and they all seemed to know and love each other.

As I knelt there in front of the Blessed Sacrament, I realized something. The same people were doing the music who were doing it fifteen years before. It was the same music, the same songs that I made fun of when I was the age of the kids who were in the pews behind me. How relevant is that? But this time the kids who were there just seemed bored. I asked them afterwards what they thought of it, and one young man said, "Well, that was ok, I guess. When are we having another Latin Mass, Father?"

In doing so, P&W sets up a situation in which people do not sing the Mass (i.e., the texts contained in the Missal and Gradual), but they sing at Mass songs chosen by the impoverished criterion that those songs "kind of go along with the readings or the theme of the day." P&W divorces the music of the Mass from the Mass and substitutes in its place texts that are not or only barely Biblical or liturgical.

Michael,

I can only add a bit to what John and Paul have said. Instrumental violin music, if done well, can take the place of instrumental organ music for the same effect. Those pieces are likely fine, particularly if they are not based on lyric-based songs, which could distract.

From 1974 to 1978, Mullins attended Cincinnati Bible College. He worked in a parking garage to help pay for his schooling. During this time Mullins performed with a college band, and later the band Zion, who released one album, for which he wrote all the songs.[14]

Shortly before his death, Mullins had been working on his next project, which was to be a concept album based on the life of Jesus Christ and was to be called Ten Songs About Jesus. On September 10, 1997, nine days before his death, he made a rough microcassette recording of the album's songs in an abandoned church. This tape was released as disc 1 of The Jesus Record, which featured new recordings of the songs on disc 2 by the Ragamuffin Band, with guest vocalists Amy Grant, Michael W. Smith, Ashley Cleveland, and Phil Keaggy. "Heaven in His Eyes" was not a new song, but had been written more than two decades earlier, and was a beloved favorite of Mullins'.

And it turns out that even some Protestants have a problem with contemporary praise and worship music. Paul Lusher, a former music minister for College Church (a Reformed Evangelical Church associated with Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL) is the founder of the website Center for Church Music. He is not a fan of praise and worship songs.

Esolen summed it up rather well. When the singing starts, . . . most of the congregation is silent or is murmuring, because the songs are for Mass entertainment, having been conceived in form and content after the patterns of mass entertainment.

Their vantage point is from right next to the sanctuary and they are undoubtedly surrounded by people who probably share their taste in music. The folks nearest to them seem to enjoy singing the contemporary songs selected. So when our music directors glance up they see only people joyfully singing along with them. But they are not seeing the forest for the trees.

Applause after a song has happened a number of times during Sunday Mass at our parish. At the last two Christmas Midnight Masses at our parish the congregation also burst into applause at the conclusion of the second of two Communion songs during Mass. This is flat out wrong.

Two Communion songs has been a standard practice in our parish for many years. No one has, however, ever given me a good reason for the second song. And it is especially annoying and distracting when the second song seems to have been selected to enable the soloist or choir to showcase his, her or their talent and full vocal range as loudly as possible.

The WORSHIPNOW Hymnal is a powerhouse of 200 prayerful, spirit-filled modern worship songs that will reinvigorate the liturgical music at your parish and inspire all to enter into full and active participation at Mass.
