When approaching my research and experiential components apart of the Social Justice Certificate, I have the following theories and Frameworks:
Racial Equity
Racial Equity is the foundation of my framework for approaching social justice work. I focus on equity rather than equality for all members of our society. I find racial equity to be more useful in my social justice work rather than equality because racial equality assumes everyone needs the same amount of tools and resources to succeed. As history proves, resources and access to resources are not equal. People of color have been systemically disadvantaged in just about every aspect of life, so it is important to focus on the specific needs of each respective marginalized community.
When considering my social justice work, I emphasized the importance of narratives. Understanding issues beyond a quantitative level is vital to ensure positive effects in the community in which you are trying to help. Gathering narratives through qualitative research helps in identifying the "why" and "how" things are operating in order for the researcher to present an accurate and detailed story of the issue being studied. Often the media's portrayal of minorities serves to further criminalize and dehumanize minorities, so it is important to uncover truthful narratives.
ACCESS
Assuring access to resources is critical in any social justice work. Access to education, healthcare, food, shelter, recreational activity, and various other resources vital for success is inequality distributed among socioeconomic groups. I focused on education in my social justice work for my research and experiential components. Access to education is proven to reduce inequalities of all kinds broadly.
Human Rights
It is impossible for social justice to exist without human rights. Human rights is a fundamental aspect of ensuring racial equity and it is important to hold individuals accountable for not upholding and guaranteeing these rights. This framework is most useful because it is the foundation of working towards social justice. I hope to combat human rights violations and inequities transnationally to help end populations from preventable suffering.
Critical Race Theory
Critical Race Theory illustrates the various ways in which racism is deeply ingrained into American society. This theoretical framework highlights the role of racism, discrimination, and inequality throughout institutions and the persistence of racial inequalities. Laws and policies intersect with issues of race and it is important to be able to identify and challenge these systemic barriers. Critical Race Theory is most useful as it challenges mainstream liberal approaches to racial injustice.
