I have loved to sing all my life and am an advanced amateur tenor with over 20 years of experience singing in community choirs and musical theater productions. More recently, I have also directed a number of productions, passing on my joy of musical theatre to my children and their classmates.
Words are so central to our existence as humans and as singers. But so are all the multitude of non-verbal sounds we produce and experience. It is inspiring to me to imagine a rich, sentient Life without words on another world.
Screeching across the pale mauve sky
Diving downwards with all four wings clasped close
Hopping on prehensile base tendrils
As its captured ground prey it begins to masticate.
Crooning softly to its mate and five spawn
Grooming their pelts with a bifold beak
Feeding them regurgitated ground fawn
Then settling down to rest for the day
Sounding the alarm as the large ones appear overhead
Hiding in shadows of fading light from the suns
Bundling little ones under each wing
And quietly waiting while cuddling low
Sounding the clear with no loss of life
Rising back up to the usual 10-story height
Shaking off fear and gulping the rest
The young family plays quietly in their feathered home.

Imagining the future is a creative activity that inspires me, both in my research and in my writing. The far, far off future is so ripe with possibilities - some wondrous, some horrendous, and some precautionarily inviting. Here is Orchestrated Life.
“It’s a C3200! They’re the best, Ma.”
“Shh. Sit your seat down. It’s starting.”
Conductor, the aforementioned 3200,
Taps quietly and, proudly, starts the show.
Its articulated arm gives the downbeat.
Bassist, an elegant B9273,
Strums a deep sustaining note.
Percussionist, a refurbished P6305,
Rolls the drum and then steadily beats.
Violinist, Pianist, Cellist and more
Commence their parts in the scripted score.
Conductor excitedly leads them through,
Pianissimo to forte, accelerando to ritard,
Till, at last, the drive to thunderous crescendo.
Then, silence.
“Perfect!” it broadcasts, quietly, to its faithful crew,
As the audience quietly appreciates the accuracy of their art.
Save for one.
“Excuse yourself when you burp!” the maternal unit exclaims.
“Sorry, Ma,” says the child bot in a perfect parody of innocence
(and then simulates swallowing air to try again).
And as here so elsewhere, everywhere,
On this benighted world
Where a billion bots,
Built in the image of their long-gone creators,
Play out their eternal, prosaic pantomime.

Keep your head up
With your eyes open wide
Don't miss a moment of this beauty
That surrounds us all on every side
Keep your hopes high
Be proud of who you are
Don't let others make you timid
Dream big and reach for your own sta-a-ar
Keep your head u-u-up
Keep your hopes hi-i-i-i-igh
Keep on going on and going on
Keep your eyes steady on the pri-i-i-i-ize
Keep your head u-u-up
Roll through every sto-o-o-o-orm
Live in every moment, grab every chance
Open every door, use your every cha-a-arm
Keep your head up
Keep all your senses open too
Cause even if you can't see a way
It may be whispering to you
Keep your hopes high
And help others out every day
Remember each can teach you something
Even if it is what not to do or sa-ay-ay
Keep your head u-u-up
Keep your hopes hi-i-i-i-igh
Keep on going on and going on
Keep your eyes steady on the pri-i-i-i-ize
Keep your head u-u-up
Listen to your hea-a-art
It may be soft, it may be broke
But it's the wisest counselor that you've go-o-ot
Keep your head up
Tie your hair back if you must
Put googles on, don't close your eyes
To bear through wind and dust
Keep your hopes high
Don't just try, always do
The future streams in many ways
And there's a path through that's made just for yo-o-ou
Keep your head u-u-up
Keep your hopes hi-i-i-i-igh
Keep on going on and going on
Keep your eyes steady on the pri-i-i-i-ize
Keep your head u-u-up
Know that I love you-ou-ou
That no matter what should happen
You were loved fully through and thro-o-o-ough
Keep your head u-u-up
Keep your hopes hi-i-i-i-igh
Keep on going on and going on
And I'll keep my eyes on you, my pride.
