Taiwanese Traditional Handcrafts
Taiwanese Traditional Handcrafts
台灣傳統技藝
From the north to the south of Taiwan, there are four endangered crafts: Sanxia indigo dyeing, Yuanli rush weaving, Sanyi wood carving, and Meinong oil-paper umbrellas.
In Sanxia, New Taipei City, the craft of indigo dyeing, made from local natural dyes, thrived in the past and continues to blend craftsmanship with local history.
In Yuanli, Miaoli County, the ancient skill of rush weaving is used to handcraft various items such as baskets and mats.
In Sanyi, Miaoli County, abundant wood resources inspire Sanyi woodcarvers to create works of art using materials like cypress and pine. These pieces often reflect local religious beliefs and natural landscapes.
In Meinong, Kaohsiung City, traditional craftsmanship is showcased through Meinong oil-paper umbrellas, which combine practicality and artistic flair using traditional handcrafting techniques.
These distinctive crafts and artworks serve as important symbols of various cultures across Taiwan, and represent the efforts of local residents to preserve and pass on their heritage.
