Book Review – “Chen Taijiquan: Masters & Methods” by David Gaffney and Davidine Siaw Voon Sim
A fascinating, clear and insightful read.
From cover to cover, a rich collection of concise and detailed writings, from some of Chen Taijiquan’s greatest teachers, thinkers and exponents.
A perfect companion to accompany the practice of Chen Taijiquan; it’s cultural roots, evolution and developments are all touched upon in a logical format.
Ranging from philosiphy to fundamentals in practice, the clear and focused commentary details the methods, benefits and skills present in a martial art with such depth, readily available to digest and reflect upon.
As with many martial arts that are traditionally taught, in a world that is fast paced and developing rapidly, there can be many questions left unanswered (not necessarily at fault of modern teachers, but as a result of the modern lifestyle we lead). Masters and Methods is both a captivating read and an invaluable tool aiding to fill in many of those gaps or misinterpretations.
Being expertly written, I would encourage all Taijiquan practitioners, enthusiasts, teachers and students to get a copy as soon as possible and absorb the teachings within.
Thank you to the authors, David and Davidine – for taking the time and energy to collect such a wealth of information throughout their years of study. To the Masters for their captivating and inspirational accounts and to all those involved in the Chen Taijiquan community that have helped make this book available for us and generations to come.
10/10!
