TaiChi can be practiced simply because it is relaxing, refreshing and enjoyable. But, It is not possible to get over 2 billion practitioners of TaiChi the world-over with these simple aspirations when spending time practicing TaiChi. What then are the other benefits of practicing?
Balance: the first thing any TaiChi practitioner will call out is 'my balance has improved tremendously'. Most of us are quite balanced and do not fall over when we walk around. What then is this 'balance'? you have to experience it to understand - how much more balanced and centered you feel after getting into TaiChi practice
Lower Body strength: Most exercises do not focus on the lower body and pelvis area, while TaiChi is all about strengthening the Pelvis and gaining lower body strength
Calmness of the mind: when you practice TaiChi for a few minutes and then sit for meditation, the mind settles into meditative calmness much more easily than it normally would. Since TaiChi movements are done with total awareness and a certain calmness, it is sometimes even referred to as 'meditation in motion'
There is a lot more to TaiChi and there are life-long gains to be derived from practicing TaiChi regularly. In fact, good health and longevity of people in countries like China and HongKong are attributed to the practice of TaiChi. It is a common sight in these countries to see people practicing TaiChi casually in public parks during any time of the day. If we can create this culture in places we live in, we will be contributing to overall health and well-being immensely.
