1) What is your "Why" Statement?
2) What are 3 goals that you have for yourself this year?
3) How do we connect & build connections amongst our ensemble?
1) Come up with at least 1 crazy (outside-the-box) idea! "Paper Clip Creativity"
a) Our Ensemble (each other) are our nucleus
b) Band is our vehicle to keep us close together
1) How do WE create a safe community for ALL of our members?
a) Think about times we did not feel it was a safe place.
b) Think about times we did not make it a safe place for others.
2) Where can we provide support for students experiencing challenges?
a) Musically? Academically? Emotionally? Focus? Organizationally?
b) What support do you need to feel safe to achieve your very best?
3) What do we need to let go of in order to put our band members first - make them our priority?
1) What is a time you were call out by a parent, boss, teacher, coach, etc. when you were actually on task?
a) How did that make you feel?
b) What did that do for your motivation?
2) Thinking about the differences in perspective between Theory X and Theory Y
A) Theory X - assumes employees/people are Lazy, Avoid Work and Dislike Work
B) Theory Y (complete opposite)- assumes employees/people are ambitious, self-motivated, exercise self-control, actually enjoy their physical and mental duties
3) Where can we "Lead" instead of "Manage"?
a) What does that look like in actual real application for us? Create some personal goals or behaviors.
1) Think about you, who you are, right now, at this time , in this place, in life.
2) Picture/Envision who you want to be, how you want to act, where you want to go in life.
3) What is your "Hill"? What is taking your time and energy holding you back from growing into the person you want to become?
4) This school year, this is your starting line, on your journey to who you want to be - that potential you have, that is you, let's get you there all together.
a) Write out in your leadership journal as much detail as you can imagine on who you WILL become
b) The only difference between a DREAM and a GOAL is a plan - let's make that plan, and start that plan.
1) Who is the example you came up with in your life (presently or from the past)?
2) How has this formula impacted your leadership plans or life plans?
a) Leadership Problems = TLT x People x Power
To Little Time - Where has this held you back?
People - Where have you been challenged?
Power - Where have you focused on status/rank/privilege instead of those you lead?
3) How does the quote, "The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts," impact your "self-leadership" - Marcus Aurelius
4) Strategies to work on individually
a) Self-Awareness - Think about traits of the poor leader example - how do you compare to that person?
b) Self-Reflection - 5 minute reflection - Raise your compassion level
What are the challenges I'm about to face
How did my leadership go yesterday?
How does the leader I would like to be look/act/think?
c) Self-Regulation - Still will encounter the problems and challenges
Reframing: Think about how big of a problem is in front of you in perspective of life-goals.
Where and why do you over-react to life's insignificant challenges?
1) Evaluation of our Band Program and our Leadership
a) What do we do?
b) How do we do what we are doing this year?
c) Why are we doing what we are doing?
2) The Golden Circle
a) Why - Very few people or organizations know "why" they do what they do
What do you believe is our Tahoma Band's Purpose?
Is that different in this remote setting? How is it? How is it the same as traditional?
b) How - Some know "how" they do it
c) What - Everyone knows "what" they do
3) If we flip our approach to match that of the most creative and successful examples, how does the above completely change?
a) Start with our "Why". Come up with a statement talking about "Why" we do what we do...include words like "we" and "believe"
b) How do we change our "How" based now on our "Why" instead of on our "What"?
c) What we do from here on out will have significantly more meaning to us and to our ensemble members and families. What do we do next to support our Why and How?
4) How do we get our band members, band parents and community "buy" into our Tahoma Band program/family knowing they will buy our "Why"?
5) How do we word our mission statement or goal as a leadership team/band program from a "Why" statement - maybe including the term "believe"?
1) Think about your "Set-up". Your set-up is what you have been given in life.
a) Make a list of things that you have been given...home, support, food, your computer, etc.
2) Think about your "punchline". Your punchline is what you give to others of your talents and gifts.
a) Write 1-3 ways that you help/support/give to others currently. How you use your "set-up".
b) Draw a bullseye (target). Think about the slingshot analogy...the more setbacks you experience (the farther you are pulled back), the further you will travel. Now what are you aiming at? What is a life goal that you have in respect to what difference or impact you make on this world?
1) Can you think of a "lollipop" moment?
a) Share that story with somebody.
2) Have you told that person who created a "lollipop" moment for you?
3) Lollipop Moments -
a) How many have you created?
b) How many have you acknowledged when others created them for you?
c) How many have you paid forward?
d) How many have you said "Thank you" for?
4) Now, go make a difference in one person's life at a time!
